Ukraine's military reports Russian troop losses near 1.57 million since 2022 invasion

Ukraine’s General Staff said on Oct. 22 that Russian forces have suffered 1,572,790 casualties since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The daily update attributed 2,250 of those losses to the previous day and listed heavy losses of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and other equipment. The report did not disclose Ukrainian military losses, while Western estimates cited by the article suggest Russian casualties are substantially higher than Ukraine’s.
Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Oct. 22 that Russian military casualties since the February 2022 invasion have reached 1,572,790, including 2,250 in the preceding day. It also listed extensive equipment losses, among them 12,439 tanks, 25,594 armored combat vehicles, and 51,447 artillery systems.
Kyiv has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational secrecy. A January 2026 CSIS assessment cited by the report estimated 500,000–600,000 Ukrainian casualties through December 2025, including 100,000–140,000 killed, while Zelensky said in February that at least 55,000 soldiers had been killed.
The reported figures could shape public understanding of the war’s human cost and may intensify pressure on families and communities in Russia and Ukraine. They may also affect how outside observers assess military sustainability and humanitarian needs. Because Ukraine does not publish its own losses and estimates vary, the numbers could be debated rather than accepted uniformly, potentially influencing public trust in official accounts and the work of aid groups supporting wounded soldiers and bereaved households.
