Ukraine’s leader rebukes US envoy’s praise of Putin after deadly strikes on Kyiv

Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized US peace envoy Steve Witkoff for calling Vladimir Putin a humanitarian after Russian missile attacks hit Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said at least two people were killed and 34 injured, including five children, in the strikes. Zelenskyy argued that Russia’s attacks after talks show the need for stronger pressure to end the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pushed back after US peace envoy Steve Witkoff praised Vladimir Putin in humanitarian terms, speaking in the wake of overnight strikes on Kyiv. Officials reported two deaths and 34 injuries in the capital, among them five children.
Zelenskyy said Russia fired 21 ballistic missiles in three waves from the previous evening, damaging homes, power sites, railway and metro infrastructure, shopping centers, businesses and a monastery. He added that 12 regions were attacked and argued the timing, soon after talks, showed Moscow’s stance had not shifted.
The strikes could deepen fear and disruption for Kyiv residents and people in the 12 affected regions, especially families with children and those relying on damaged energy, transport and commercial sites. Emergency crews and local services may face added strain. The public dispute over the US envoy’s remarks may also shape how Ukrainians view diplomatic efforts, potentially affecting confidence in talks and pressure campaigns.
