App Store to Flag Software Optimized for iPhone Duo

Apple says the App Store will mark software built specifically for the iPhone Duo as 'Made for iPhone Duo.' Developers must use the iOS 27.1 SDK or newer to qualify, and optimized apps use the full inner screen with a vertical toolbar. Apps built with older SDKs still run but leave unused space around the interface.
Apple's forthcoming App Store designation will identify titles built for the iPhone Duo with a dedicated "Made for iPhone Duo" tag. To earn it, developers must compile against iOS 27.1 or a newer SDK; such apps use the whole inner screen and place their toolbar vertically beneath the status bar.
The distinction is granular: software built with the iOS 27 SDK uses most of the inner display but still leaves the right-edge status bar clear, while apps on iOS 26 or earlier remain usable yet sit centered with substantial side margins. Apple says optimized apps are increasing daily and points users to the App Store's updates menu; the device arrives Friday.
The labeling could shape how shoppers judge app readiness for the new device, nudging developers toward newer SDKs to avoid looking outdated. Users may benefit from clearer expectations about screen use and layout, while smaller teams could face added upgrade work. Because older apps still run, the change may be gradual rather than disruptive, with the badge becoming a visible signal of optimization for buyers, developers, and App Store browsers.
