Apple highlights iPhone Duo app upgrades after early criticism

Early reviews of the iPhone Duo complained that some third-party apps were not yet suited to its new screen dimensions. Apple responded by pointing to apps that use the larger inner display for video controls, sports statistics, productivity, editing, and games. Optimized apps will carry a Made for iPhone Duo badge in the App Store.
Early reviewers on Wednesday said several third-party apps fit the iPhone Duo poorly because of its new screen proportions; one critic used the word “horrible.” Apple answered Thursday with a media note describing optimized apps: Netflix and Paramount+ can place playback controls or show information on the lower half, while MLB will offer live coverage alongside statistics from launch.
Apple also listed productivity tools including Slack, Zoom, Word, and Outlook, editing apps such as Instagram Edits and VLLO, and games including Asphalt Legends and Zenless Zone Zero. Optimized titles get a “Made for iPhone Duo” App Store badge. Apple noted that past launches, including iPad and earlier iPhones, also saw many apps lag behind at first.
The rollout could affect iPhone Duo buyers who rely on third-party apps, since uneven optimization may shape first impressions and daily usability. Developers may face pressure to update quickly to earn badge visibility, while Apple’s promotion may steer users toward optimized services. Over time, this could normalize dual-screen app designs and influence expectations for folding devices, though the immediate impact depends on how fast popular apps adapt.
