Gemini in Android Auto gains optional access to personal Google data

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto, allowing the assistant to use Gmail, Calendar, Photos, and other services for contextual answers. The feature is opt-in, and users can choose which apps and services to permit. It follows earlier Personal Intelligence availability on Android phones and in Search.
Google’s new Android Auto capability extends Personal Intelligence, a feature previously available on Android phones and in Search, to the car. Drivers can let Gemini consult Gmail, Calendar, Photos, and other Google services so replies reflect personal context, such as schedules or travel details. The setting is off unless users enable it.
Permissions can be adjusted at any time, and existing choices from a user’s Gemini profile carry over to Android Auto. Google says personal data used this way stays inside its existing secure systems, is not shared with third-party services, and is not used to train foundational AI models. Users can toggle access for services including Photos, Maps, Search and Discovery, YouTube history, and Workspace.
For drivers and passengers, contextual answers could reduce distraction by cutting follow-up questions and making hands-free requests more useful. People who enable the feature may gain convenience but also need to manage which Google services Gemini can consult. Those who leave it off may see little change. Broader adoption could normalize in-car assistants drawing on personal data, making clear permissions and easy controls important for trust.
