Ukraine Says Russia Deployed Modified Geran-5 With Optical Guidance and Stealth Features

A Ukrainian defense technology adviser reported that Russia used a new Geran-5 variant, called the K5-K, in an attack on Ukraine. The drone reportedly relies on terrain-image navigation, has improved range, speed and altitude, and features a low-observable design. The adviser also said Russia employed its new Filin cruise missile the same day.
Ukrainian adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said on October 23 that Russia used a Geran-5 K5-K variant in an attack. He said it was first detected about a month earlier. Its reported terrain-image navigation reduces reliance on satellite signals vulnerable to jamming. He also cited longer range, higher speed and altitude, without figures, plus a new low-observable shape likely meant to lower radar signature.
The same day, Beskrestnov reported use of the Filin cruise missile and shared its first photo. Ukrainian intelligence had revealed it a day earlier. Reported details include up to 1,200 km range, 800 kph top speed, 6 km altitude and a warhead comparable to one or two Geran-type drones. It reportedly entered use in late summer.
The reported fielding of modified drones and a new cruise missile could heighten risks for Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure, while making air-defense planning more demanding. It may also push militaries and manufacturers toward greater investment in counter-drone sensors, electronic warfare and interception systems. Public attention could focus on air-raid readiness and the cost of protecting critical sites, though the actual effects would depend on production numbers, reliability and how often such weapons are used.
