Apple enters foldable phone race with premium iPhone Duo

Apple has introduced its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, in several major markets at a starting price near $2,000. Launch availability was constrained and online reservations were prioritized, with delivery estimates slipping to late January. IDC forecasts Apple will capture 44% of the global foldable market's value in 2026.
The Duo debuted on October 23, 2026, in the U.S., China, Singapore, Australia and the U.K., marking Apple’s first foldable and an early test for CEO John Ternus, who took over in September. Apple capped pre-orders at two units per buyer and, in India, China, France, Hong Kong and Japan, limited launch-day sales to customers with online orders.
Pricing varies by market: about $2,000 in the U.S., A$3,899 for a 512GB model in Australia and HK$17,499 for 256GB in Hong Kong. IDC expects Apple to take 44% of foldable market value in 2026 on 31% of shipments, then lead by both measures in 2027.
The iPhone Duo could affect premium buyers, app developers and accessory makers by making tablet-style multitasking more portable, while its near-$2,000 price may keep foldables concentrated among affluent early adopters. Competitors may face pressure to differentiate on software, display and hinge design, and on price. Wider adoption could depend on whether component costs fall and whether everyday apps adapt well to the form factor.
