Samsung Tops Slumping Indian Smartphone Market in Q3 2026

India’s smartphone shipments fell 20% year on year in the July–September 2026 quarter. Samsung regained the top position with a 17% share, while shipments below Rs 20,000 dropped 47%. Higher phone and memory prices contributed to weaker demand.
Counterpoint Research data indicates India’s July–September 2026 smartphone market hit its weakest third quarter in a decade, with volumes down one-fifth from a year earlier. Buyers faced costlier devices and memory components, and many appeared to delay upgrades even as the festive sales period approached.
Samsung returned to first place after nine quarters, capturing 17% of the market. Its Galaxy A lineup and retail footprint supported sales, while disciplined pricing and component-cost handling helped it outperform a contracting market. Demand below Rs 20,000 was especially weak, with that segment down 47%.
The contraction may affect budget-conscious buyers most, as higher prices and a sharp drop in sub-Rs 20,000 shipments could delay replacements or push people toward older devices. Retailers and manufacturers reliant on high-volume affordable sales could see weaker footfall and tighter margins, while brands may focus more on premium segments. If memory costs remain elevated, affordability could stay a barrier, potentially widening gaps in smartphone access.
