Ukraine reports Starshield speed restoration after battlefield communications slowdown

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Starshield was operating above 400 km/h on Oct. 24, up from a 161 km/h cap. The ministry said the connection was stable and that it was monitoring the service with Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara. The earlier limits had hampered drone operations and battlefield communications, and reports said Trump pressed Elon Musk to lift them.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Oct. 24 that Starshield had returned to speeds above 400 km/h, compared with a prior 161 km/h ceiling. It described the link as steady and said monitoring continued under Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara.
The restrictions, in place since mid-October, had affected drone use, logistics and battlefield communications. Reports said President Trump told Elon Musk on Oct. 21 to remove the caps; Trump later said he had not discussed it with Musk and would act if problems persisted. Senator Richard Blumenthal opened a probe.
Restored Starshield speeds could ease pressure on Ukrainian drone operators and frontline units, potentially improving coordination and response times. Civilian communities near combat zones may benefit indirectly if defenses and logistics function more reliably. The episode may also sharpen public scrutiny of private satellite providers’ role in warfare and of government oversight, while leaving accountability questions that could affect trust among users and allies.
