Ukraine’s military puts Russian troop losses at over 1.57 million

Ukraine’s General Staff reported that Russia has lost 1,576,600 troops in Ukraine since February 2022, including 1,980 in the past day. The report also listed heavy losses of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, aircraft, drones, and naval vessels. Ukraine does not publish its own casualty figures, while Western estimates say Russian losses are significantly higher.
Ukraine’s General Staff said on Oct. 24 that Russian military personnel losses since the February 2022 invasion have reached 1,576,600, with 1,980 added in the previous day. Its tally also included 12,444 tanks, 25,600 armored vehicles, 51,565 artillery systems, 449 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 35 ships and boats, and two submarines.
Ukraine’s military has declined to release its own casualty count, citing security concerns. A January 2026 CSIS assessment estimated 500,000–600,000 Ukrainian casualties through December 2025, including 100,000–140,000 killed, while Zelensky said in February that at least 55,000 soldiers had been killed. Western analyses cited put Russian losses at roughly 2.5-to-1 or 2-to-1 compared with Ukraine’s.
The reported casualty scale could intensify strain on Ukrainian families and communities, especially those awaiting confirmation of missing soldiers. Higher losses may also affect veterans’ rehabilitation, medical and social services, and local labor capacity. Public discussion of such figures may shape morale and trust in official communications, though the impact depends on verification and how authorities present the data.
