Egyptian agency says startup FDI reached $455 million

The head of Egypt's MSMEDA outlined support for entrepreneurs at the Egypt Forum, including plans for an innovation unit and a data platform for small and startup businesses. The agency said it has contributed to 16 investment funds and attracted $455 million in foreign direct investment for startups. It also stressed training, feasibility studies, and cooperation with the Finance Ministry.
At the Egypt Forum session on entrepreneurs moving from concept to growth, MSMEDA chief Mostafa Ismail Hassan said the agency plans an innovation-support unit and a data platform covering small, medium and startup firms, drawing on information from relevant state bodies. He also highlighted collaboration with the Finance Ministry, especially on venture-capital work.
The agency reported stakes in 16 investment funds totaling $55 million, which it says helped draw $455 million in foreign direct investment for joint backing of Egyptian startups; 170 startups benefited, and 93 were classified after a startup charter launched in February 2026. Training reached 318 entrepreneurs, support staff and fund managers, plus 22 banking and finance cadres.
The push may broaden access to advice, data and capital for Egyptian founders and small firms, potentially helping them formalize, hire and scale. If the innovation unit and data platform work as intended, banks, investors and support organizations could target services more accurately. Benefits may be uneven, however, and depend on implementation, outreach beyond established networks, and whether training and funding translate into durable jobs and viable businesses.
