Polish Diplomat Rebukes Musk’s Political Role and Promotes European Satellites

Poland’s foreign minister criticized Elon Musk for blurring business and politics after restrictions affected Starlink and Starshield use in Ukraine. He noted Poland spends about $50 million a year on Ukrainian Starlink services and pointed to European efforts to develop independent satellite capacity.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski made the remarks at a Friday conference in Łódź, where he addressed Europe’s reliance on US technology. He has previously clashed publicly with Elon Musk online. Sikorski said Poland spends about $50 million yearly on Starlink for Ukraine and argued that commercial and political roles should remain separate.
He spoke after Ukrainian officials reported sharp limits on Starshield, the military Starlink variant, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warning of lethal consequences. The cutback coincided with strained Kyiv-Washington ties. Meanwhile, Finland’s ICEYE and Nokia announced a joint effort with Ukraine’s defense ministry to develop an independent satellite communications system.
The dispute may sharpen public debate over how much critical communications infrastructure should depend on a single foreign company. If European satellite projects advance, they could give Ukraine and EU governments more options, but costs and timelines may affect taxpayers and telecom firms. Restrictions on battlefield connectivity could directly affect Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who rely on such services, while also influencing how allied governments weigh commercial providers’ political influence.
