Roman Space Telescope Blasts Off to Survey Dark Energy and Exoplanets
NASA's $4.3 billion Roman Space Telescope launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center on August 30, 2026. It will travel to a point 1 million miles from Earth, where it will use a field of view over 100 times wider than Hubble's to study dark energy, exoplanets, and billions of galaxies. The mission is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer.

The telescope's journey will take over three months to reach its observation point, a million miles from Earth where the Webb telescope also operates. Its field of view exceeds Hubble's by a factor of 100, enabling rapid surveys that would take Hubble a century to complete in just one month of Milky Way observations. The mission will coordinate with Webb, Euclid, and the Vera Rubin Observatory to cross-reference discoveries.
Roman's primary targets include dark energy and dark matter, which together constitute most of the universe's contents yet remain poorly understood. By cataloging billions of galaxies and tens of billions of stars, scientists hope to measure cosmic expansion rates more precisely. The telescope will
