The report from SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence highlights that data centers drove 5 of the nearly 31 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity added in the first half of 2026, with three-quarters of commercial and industrial installations tied to these facilities. Tech firms are pairing lithium-ion systems with onsite gas generators to maximize output, while also funding residential batteries and rooftop solar in surrounding communities as a condition for grid connection. Analysts expect data center battery demand to quintuple by 2030, reflecting a broader shift toward hybrid power solutions.
Public opposition remains significant—56% of Americans would oppose a local data center—yet 73% support requiring these facilities to offset electricity use through home solar or weatherization. Former DOE official Jigar Shah suggests such community investments may prove cheaper and more politically viable than building additional gas turbines, as companies seek the social license needed to expand.
This trend could reshape how large energy consumers interact with local grids, potentially accelerating residential battery adoption and home efficiency upgrades in data center regions. Communities may gain leverage to demand tangible benefits, like lower household energy costs or improved resilience, in exchange for hosting infrastructure. However, the reliance on gas generation alongside batteries may temper climate gains, and the fivefold demand projection could strain lithium supply chains.
