Climate change disrupts centuries-old ocean link between Indian and Pacific

Researchers combined paleoclimate data and model simulations to show that volcanic eruptions can temporarily weaken the climate connection between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Human-caused warming now appears to be causing an even more unusual breakdown in that relationship. The study suggests the recent shift is exceptional compared to natural variability.
The research team reconstructed ocean conditions using natural climate archives—corals, tree rings, and stalagmites—that preserve environmental signals from centuries past. These records allowed scientists to extend their analysis well beyond the roughly 100-year span of instrumental measurements, reaching back to the early 1600s. The study identified an 1810–1850 disruption tied to major tropical volcanic eruptions, with model simulations spanning a thousand years confirming that eruption size and background conditions determined how severely the ocean link weakened.
The findings appear in Nature Communications, with co-author Caroline Ummenhofer noting this is among the first efforts to examine the Pacific-Indian Ocean breakdown using paleoclimate evidence, modern observations, and model simulations together. The comparison between historical volcanic disruptions and today's warming-driven changes suggests the current shift is more pronounced than anything seen in four centuries of reconstructed climate behavior.
The weakening ocean link could affect rainfall patterns and monsoon dynamics across tropical regions, potentially disrupting agriculture and water supplies for hundreds of millions of people in South Asia, East Africa, and Indonesia who depend on predictable seasonal weather. Coastal communities and fisheries may face altered marine conditions as ocean temperature and circulation patterns shift. The study's long-term perspective may help scientists improve seasonal forecasting, giving vulnerable populations more preparation time for extreme weather events, though the unprecedented nature of current changes makes future projections inherently uncertain.
