Brain's local connections may buffer cognitive decline from gray matter loss

A study of older adults found that healthier superficial white matter, which connects nearby brain regions, is linked to better language skills. This wiring appears to reduce the impact of gray matter shrinkage on cognition. The findings suggest that preserving these local pathways could support mental function in aging.
The study employed diffusion MRI to assess neurite density and free-water movement in superficial white matter, offering a window into microscopic tissue health that standard scans miss. Researchers examined 459 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and older in India, marking one of the first investigations of this brain region in a low- and middle-income country setting. Language abilities showed the most consistent correlation with wiring health, particularly in frontotemporal areas governing word recognition and fluent speech.
These local connections function like neighborhood roads, linking adjacent cortical regions for rapid information exchange. While gray matter handles information processing, superficial white matter facilitates communication between nearby areas. The findings suggest these two tissue types operate as interdependent systems, with healthier local wiring potentially compensating for age-related gray matter shrinkage.
This research could reshape how clinicians assess cognitive aging risk, potentially adding superficial white matter integrity to standard brain health evaluations. For aging populations worldwide, particularly in regions where advanced imaging is becoming more accessible, such measures may enable earlier identification of individuals who could benefit from interventions targeting vascular health or physical activity.
