Drone strike reportedly damages major Yandex facility in Ryazan Oblast

A large Yandex data center in Russia's Ryazan Oblast was reportedly damaged during an overnight drone attack, with a fire breaking out at the site. Yandex confirmed an infrastructure incident and power problems in one of its cloud zones, warning customers that other services could be affected. The facility sits at the Sasta machine-tool plant, which has been under U.K. sanctions, though it is not clear whether the data center, the plant, or both were targeted.
The affected site is Yandex DC Sasovo, described by the company as its largest data center and a support hub for services and cloud infrastructure. Yandex Cloud reported an incident and power problems in its ru-central1-b availability zone, starting near 1:31 a.m.; roughly forty minutes later, conditions remained unstable, and customers were advised some services might need relocation.
The facility sits on grounds linked to the Sasta machine-tool plant, which produces high-precision CNC metalworking equipment for defense, aerospace, oil and gas, and heavy machinery. Sasta has been under U.K. sanctions since 2024. It remains unclear whether the data center, the plant, or both were targeted; no broad outage appeared across Yandex’s main consumer services.
The disruption could affect individuals and businesses relying on Yandex services and cloud customers in the ru-central1-b zone, who may face outages or need to shift workloads. If the site’s industrial setting is confirmed as involved, workers and nearby communities might face safety or environmental concerns. Broader effects may depend on how quickly services are restored and whether the incident is linked to the reported strike.
