Jio Pursues Homegrown Satellite Technology and Pre-6G Patents, Ambani Says

Reliance Jio is building an India-based satellite technology stack and has submitted patent filings related to pre-6G communications, according to Chairman Akash Ambani. Speaking at India Mobile Congress 2026, he said the company is also working on AI-enabled voice and data services, satellite connectivity, and 6G. The effort is intended to strengthen India's role in next-generation telecom.
At India Mobile Congress 2026, Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani described work on a satellite technology system developed within India. He said the company has submitted patent applications in the period before 6G's commercial rollout.
Jio is also exploring AI uses for voice and data services, alongside satellite connectivity and 6G. Ambani tied these efforts to India's aim of generating 10% of 6G patents, saying Jio plans to contribute heavily. Its IMC showcase stressed a more connected digital future and better consumer services.
If these efforts advance, Indian consumers could gain new satellite-linked and AI-assisted voice and data services, potentially improving coverage in areas where traditional networks are weaker. Domestic patent activity may strengthen local telecom research, standards participation, and supplier ecosystems, affecting engineers, startups, and equipment makers. Real benefits may depend on execution, affordability, and whether supporting infrastructure and devices arrive in time.
