EWE to supply tesa with green hydrogen under German deal
tesa has agreed to purchase 500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually from EWE HYDROGEN GmbH for its Hamburg facility starting in 2028. The hydrogen, produced with renewable power at EWE's planned 320 MW Emden plant, will fuel steam generation and is expected to cut about 6,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. tesa is connecting its plant to the HH-WIN hydrogen network, with two dual-fuel steam boilers being prepared for the switch.
Under the agreement, tesa will take 500 tonnes of green hydrogen each year at its Hamburg site beginning in 2028. EWE intends to make the fuel at a 320 MW facility in Emden, scheduled to begin operating by late 2027, and move it through an emerging hydrogen pipeline system. The switch is expected to cut roughly 6,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
tesa is linking its plant to the HH-WIN network, with that connection targeted for completion by late 2027. Two dual-fuel steam boilers will support the change; one is already installed and connected. Separately, EWE GASSPEICHER hired Bilfinger in September 2026 to provide a hydrogen treatment unit for a planned Huntorf storage site.
This deal may help lower emissions at tesa's Hamburg operations and support local air quality, while reinforcing demand for renewable hydrogen production and infrastructure. Workers at the plant could see equipment and training changes as dual-fuel boilers replace some fossil fuel use. Nearby communities may benefit from reduced carbon output, though the wider effect depends on how quickly the hydrogen network and Emden plant are completed.
