Mobile Network Rankings Shift Focus from Raw Speed to Dependable Performance

Opensignal’s 2026 awards evaluated 266 operators in 82 markets using eight metrics, including speed, reliability, consistent quality, and application experience. T-Mobile USA led large land-area markets for download speed at 180.2 Mbps, while SK Telecom topped the small land-area group at 192.2 Mbps. The report argues that fast downloads alone do not show whether networks reliably support gaming, uploads, voice calls, or cloud applications.
Opensignal's 2026 awards covered 266 carriers in 82 markets and used eight indicators, with data gathered from July through late December 2025. T-Mobile USA recorded 180.2 Mbps for downloads in the large-land-area group, while SK Telecom reached 192.2 Mbps in the smaller-land-area group.
Reliability scores were 954.5 for Japan's au and 971.4 for SK Telecom. Consistent quality reached 90.8% for SK Telecom; among large-area operators, Norway's ice scored 87.2%, au 86.1%, SoftBank 84.6%, and Telekom Germany 82.7%. Finland's DNA led large-area uploads at 19.4 Mbps.
This shift could affect mobile users, app developers, and operators. Consumers may gain clearer expectations about calls, gaming, uploads, and cloud tools, while carriers might compete more on reliability and consistency than peak speed. Businesses relying on mobile connectivity could see better service accountability, though smaller operators may face pressure to invest in coverage and busy-hour capacity. Regulators and consumer groups may use broader metrics to compare networks, but measurement choices could shape perceptions unevenly.
