Amazon’s Alexa tablets move upmarket with Google Play and Alexa+

Amazon introduced three new Alexa tablets: the 8, 11, and 12 Pro models, priced from $230 to $500, with pre-orders open and shipping starting October 14. The devices run Android and mark the first newer Amazon tablets to include Google Play access alongside Amazon’s app store. Amazon also announced new Kids’ Tablets with Google Play support and parental controls.
Amazon’s new Alexa Tablet family includes 8, 11, and 12 Pro variants, priced at $230, $330, and $500 respectively. Pre-orders are live, with shipping scheduled for October 14. Unlike earlier Fire tablets, these models run Android and offer Google Play alongside Amazon’s own app marketplace. Amazon also revealed new Kids’ Tablets with Google Play access and parental controls.
The 12 Pro adds a 4nm eight-core chip, up to 16GB RAM, 128GB storage, and a 12-inch 120Hz screen. A Nanomatte anti-glare option costs $50 more, starting at $550. Accessories include a $90 Pro Pen with 4,096 pressure levels, tilt detection, and wireless charging, plus a magnetic Pro Keyboard with trackpad and no Bluetooth pairing.
These tablets may appeal to shoppers seeking Android flexibility without leaving Amazon’s ecosystem, potentially pressuring other budget tablet makers. Families could benefit from Google Play plus parental controls, though app availability and child safety remain considerations. Alexa+ integration may normalize screen-aware assistants, affecting how users interact with devices. Developers might see another Android distribution channel. Overall impact depends on performance, privacy, and price.
