Magic: The Gathering Announces First Original Universes Beyond Set for 2027

Wizards of the Coast has revealed an original Universes Beyond set for Magic: The Gathering, scheduled for April 2027. It is described as the first release of its kind for the game. The announcement follows fan concerns that making Universes Beyond sets Standard-legal could reduce original in-universe sets or overcrowd Standard.
The upcoming release is titled Marvel: Darkhold Destiny. It is being developed with Marvel and is positioned as a Magic-focused product that reimagines existing Marvel figures while introducing a new setting and a new character. That character will appear first in a Marvel comic, digitally in February 2027 and physically that April.
The set itself launches in April 2027 and will feature werewolves, vampires, and witches. Wizards says its story was written by its narrative team specifically for Magic. The reveal comes after players worried that making Universes Beyond sets Standard-legal might crowd out original in-universe releases or expand Standard too quickly.
This could affect Magic players, collectors, and Marvel fans by blurring boundaries between licensed crossovers and original storytelling. If successful, it may encourage more hybrid products, potentially influencing how card games balance accessible Standard play with collector demand. It could also shape expectations around comics and tabletop tie-ins, though actual social impact will depend on availability, pricing, and reception.
