Oaxaca News Director Killed in Attack Prosecutors Say Targeted Another Man

Hamurabi Huesca, director of the outlet Pinotepa Comunica and a taxi driver, was shot dead on 9 October 2026 in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca. Two other people died in the same attack, including a man known as El Darío. Prosecutors believe the assault was aimed at El Darío, describing him as a major source of violence on the Oaxaca coast, and have not said Huesca's journalism was a factor.
Huesca led the digital outlet Pinotepa Comunica, which reports on Oaxaca’s Costa region, while also driving a taxi in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional. The shooting occurred in the afternoon of 9 October 2026 in the town’s Planta y Porvenir neighbourhood.
Three people died: Huesca, a man identified as O.F.M.M., and Darío Armando S. A., known as “El Darío.” Local reports said Huesca was driving a client, identified as El Darío. Oaxaca prosecutors said the attack was likely aimed at El Darío, calling him a leading source of violence on the coast, and pointed to a dispute among local criminal groups. Authorities had announced no detentions.
The killing may deepen concern among journalists and residents in Oaxaca’s Costa region, where reporting on crime can carry risk. Because prosecutors currently describe Huesca as a bystander, the case could also complicate efforts to assess whether local media face targeted threats. Travelers and businesses along the Pacific coast may feel heightened unease if violence linked to criminal disputes continues. Families of the three dead and local outlets may press for clearer answers as the investigation proceeds.
