BYD Keeps Lead Over Tesla as Geely and Volkswagen Gain Ground in EV Sales

BYD sold more battery-electric vehicles than Tesla in the first nine months of 2026, with about 1.63 million passenger BEVs versus Tesla's 1.32 million deliveries. Geely and Volkswagen are also strengthening their positions through broader model lineups and regional expansion. Comparisons require care because BYD and Geely sell plug-in hybrids as well as BEVs, while Tesla sells only BEVs.
The comparison separates fully electric cars from plug-in hybrids, since BYD and Geely offer both while Tesla offers only BEVs. In 2025, BYD reported 2,256,714 passenger BEVs, Tesla 1,636,129 deliveries, Geely 1,073,805, and Volkswagen Group 983,100 including commercial vehicles.
Through September 2026, BYD's passenger BEV total was 1,629,957 versus Tesla's 1,324,681. BYD's BEV volume edged up 1.5% year on year, but its plug-in hybrid sales dropped 10.2%. Tesla's third-quarter deliveries were 486,532, with Model 3 and Model Y making up 478,237.
Stronger competition among BYD, Tesla, Geely, and Volkswagen could give consumers more electric choices and may pressure prices, especially in compact and mass-market segments. Workers and suppliers tied to both legacy and newer EV supply chains may face shifting demand as model ranges and regional strategies change. Wider BEV adoption may depend on charging access and affordability, so the sales race's social benefits could vary by region and income group.
