Istanbul floods kill three and force thousands to evacuate

Heavy rain that began on October 13 and intensified over Istanbul on October 14, 2026, left at least three people dead and three missing. Authorities evacuated 2,727 people and closed schools through October 16 as floodwaters inundated roads, homes, and businesses. Emergency crews responded to thousands of reports and deployed personnel, vehicles, and boats across the city.
Rain began on Oct. 13 and grew stronger over Istanbul the next day. AKOM recorded 50–95 mm in northern and central districts and 10–40 mm elsewhere. Beykoz saw 261 mm, while a later official figure cited 272 mm somewhere in the city without specifying the site or period.
Crews logged 1,901 municipal reports; 8,392 personnel and 2,246 vehicles or machines were sent. The wider response involved 46,597 people, 8,597 search-and-rescue staff, 2,288 vehicles and 14 boats, with reinforcements from four other provinces. At Istanbul Airport, 51 flights were diverted and 19 canceled; 16 roads stayed shut.
Residents in flooded districts, commuters, schoolchildren and workers may face disrupted routines, damaged property and safety risks from standing water or electrical hazards. Evacuations and road closures could strain local services and separate families temporarily. Airport diversions and canceled flights may ripple to travelers beyond Istanbul. Emergency crews and public employees could face fatigue as response continues. Recovery costs for homes and businesses may add financial pressure, though the full extent is not yet clear.
