Clean-tech factory race in 2026: China stays ahead as US, Europe and India scale up

China continues to lead clean-technology manufacturing in 2026, while the United States, Europe and India spend billions on solar panels, EV batteries, energy storage and wind equipment. The IEA estimated the global market for key clean-energy technologies at almost $1.2 trillion in 2025, though annual manufacturing investment slipped from nearly $220 billion in 2023 to less than $200 billion in 2024. China produced about 16 million electric cars in 2025, roughly 75% of global output, and supplied more than 80% of battery cells, about 85% of cathode active materials and over 90% of anode active materials.
EXPANDED:
China's clean-tech edge rests on linked supply chains, large output and low costs. In 2025, it built about 16 million electric cars, nearly three-quarters of world production, and exported over 2.5 million. It also made over four-fifths of battery cells, around 85% of cathode materials and more than 90% of anode materials. CATL, BYD, LONGi and JinkoSolar are named as key manufacturers. Solar overcapacity and price pressure remain challenges.
The US is adding capacity: First Solar's Alabama plant cost about $1.1 billion and added 3.5 GW of thin-film modules, employing roughly 855 people in 2025. Qcells began cell output in Cartersville, Georgia, in June 2026 as part of 8.4 GW module plans. The IEA put the 2025 clean-energy technology market near $1.2 trillion, while yearly manufacturing investment fell from almost $220 billion in 2023 to under $200 billion in 2024.
