Russian FPV Drone Strike Hits Ukrainian DITA Artillery

Russia’s Rubikon drone unit released video said to show an FPV strike destroying a Czech-made DITA 155 mm self-propelled howitzer near Novopavlivka in Donetsk region. The unit said the attack occurred two days before the footage appeared on October 20, following an earlier DITA loss in Sumy region on October 7. The article notes that the Netherlands funded Ukraine’s initial nine DITA systems and later ordered six more.
Rubikon published footage on October 20 that it says shows a strike two days earlier near Novopavlivka, in Donetsk region, against a Ukrainian DITA howitzer. This follows its October 7 video of a DITA hit in Sumy region, drawing attention to the small fleet’s exposure.
The DITA is a Czech Excalibur Army 155 mm system with automated loading and fire control, operable by two crew. It advertises a 39 km range, 40 rounds, and a Tatra 8x8 chassis. The Netherlands funded nine delivered in summer 2024 and later ordered six more, for 15 announced systems.
The loss could heighten pressure on Ukrainian artillery crews, who may face greater risk when operating near the front and may need to rely on remaining systems or adjust tactics. It may also affect public debate in the Netherlands and Czechia about funding and replenishing donated equipment, while reinforcing concerns among military planners that drone surveillance is changing artillery survivability.
