Commercial Ship Sinks Off Romania After Reported Drone Attack

A commercial vessel sank in the Black Sea about 24 kilometers off Romania's coast after reportedly being struck by a drone, leaving one person dead and three crew members missing. Rescue teams are searching for the missing, and authorities have not determined where the drone came from or whether the ship was deliberately targeted. Romania's president described the sinking as part of Russian escalation in the Black Sea, while NATO has boosted surveillance after recent attacks on commercial shipping.
The vessel went down roughly 24 kilometers from Romania’s shoreline. One crew member is confirmed dead, three remain unaccounted for, and search teams are still working. Officials have not established the drone’s origin or whether the ship was intentionally attacked.
The incident follows an October 15 strike on two commercial ships anchored near the Danube-Black Sea Canal, a key route for Ukrainian exports. Similar drone attacks in Bulgarian waters have reportedly killed or left missing at least 23 sailors. NATO has increased monitoring, and Romania has proposed a joint Black Sea command with Bulgaria and Turkey.
The sinking may heighten risks for commercial crews and port communities in the Black Sea, where repeated attacks could disrupt shipping routes used for Ukrainian goods. Higher insurance and security costs could affect exporters and consumers, while NATO’s added surveillance and Romania’s proposed joint command may reassure some residents but also raise regional tensions. Families of missing sailors remain directly affected as rescue efforts continue.
