Jordanian design biennial returns with expanded regional showcase

Amman Design Week held its fourth edition in October 2026 after a seven-year break. The event featured exhibitions across several Amman districts and a satellite installation in Aqaba, along with talks, tours, and workshops. Its theme, Accumulations, focused on the skills and knowledge developed by regional designers during the hiatus.
The 2026 edition was the fourth Amman Design Week and followed a pause dating to 2019. It ran longer than the 2019 programme and drew nearly double the designers, with exhibitions in three Amman districts plus rural Iraq Al Amir and a first satellite project in Aqaba.
Curator Faysal Tabbarah said the plural title Accumulations let several narratives coexist. Co-directors Bisher Tabbaa and Sarah Hejazin described the theme as recognition that current work rests on earlier practice. The programme also included a weaving residency, community agroecology tours, printing-history talks and music events.
The biennial may strengthen Jordan’s creative economy by connecting designers, artisans and regional collaborators, potentially opening visibility and income opportunities for craftspeople and small studios. Local audiences and students could gain access to talks, tours and workshops that make design and heritage more legible. Aqaba’s satellite installation may extend cultural tourism beyond Amman, though lasting social benefit likely depends on follow-up programming and whether participating communities remain involved.
